One of the neighborhood's most attractive features is its proximity to a wide variety of services and shopping. Within the neighborhood are churches, Bowerman Elementary and Reed Middle schools, a laundry mat, convenience store, beauty shop, barber shop and auto repair business. Woodland Heights offers residents several restaurants and a leisurely stroll to antique shops, flea markets and other second hand stores.
Lafayette Park, a small neighborhood facility with picnic and playground equipment, provides a place for sports activities. The neighborhood association and other groups have picnics there regularly. With all the amenities in and near the neighborhood, Woodland Heights is a great place for family living.
It takes area residents working together to preserve the neighborhood’s rich character and identity. The Woodland Heights Neighborhood Association is active in maintaining and enhancing the area. They sponsor activities such as House of the Month, neighborhood wide clean-ups, rehabilitating properties, and over 400 trees were just planted.
There are loan programs available through the City of Springfield to rehabilitate homes in the Woodland Heights neighborhood .
The area offers many different types and styles of housing units. Single family homes make up the majority of the types. Many of the homes in Woodland Heights represent turn of the century architectural styles such as Queen Anne, Late Victorian, Bungalow and Catalog styles. These structures reflect a period when the front porch was an extension of the living space that enhanced interaction with one's neighbor, a tradition that is making a comeback today.
